5 ready-to-use resources for teaching digital citizenship

Digital Citizenship Week is celebrated this year from October 20th through October 24th.  As digital citizens, students learn about being a responsible and respectful person online. Whether it is having your students wear cool shades to learn about protecting their private information to wearing pajamas to show that you need to take a break from technology or wearing mismatched socks to show how we need to protect our digital footprints.

Looking for ways to start weaving digital citizenship into your classroom? Check out the resources below.

1. Meet the Digital Citizens coloring book from Common Sense Education

Sign up for a FREE Common Sense Education account and get videos and lessons on teaching students to “Pause and Think Online,”  “How Technology Makes You Feel,”  “My Online Neighborhood,” and more.

2. Digital Citizen books from Book Creator

Continue teaching  your students about the Digital Citizens through these ready made books. If you have a Book Creator account, remix these book to have each student think and reflect about their online usage.

From our head down to our toes, and our feet up to our nose, the Digital Citizens teach students how to be safe, responsible, and respectful online. (Book description from Common Sense Education)

Children make friends everywhere they go -- including online. But are all of these friendships the same? How can children start online friendships and also learn ways to stay safe? (Book description from Common Sense Education)

How do digital citizens take responsibility for themselves, their communities, and their world? This book helps learners think beyond themselves and recognize the ripple effects of their actions. (Book description from Common Sense Education)

4. Interactive Digital Citizenship lessons from Nearpod

Nearpod offers more interaction with the Digital Citizens through either Live Participation or Student-Paced lessons. Students can answer questions, draw pictures, and engage in classroom discussions. There are many lessons that are unlocked and available for free like the one below. Check out this article for more information about their Digital Citizenship content. Note: You’ll need to create your free account before you can view the activity.

In this short "Device Advice" lesson, students will prepare to use tech in the classroom by learning how to keep their devices safe and functioning. (Activity description from Nearpod)

5. Create a Digital Citizenship Superhero with Common Sense Media

This lesson helps K-2 students understand what it means to be a "super digital citizen." By comparing it to their favorite superheroes, students learn that being safe, responsible, and respectful are three key "superpowers" for making good choices online. The lesson guides them through discussions on each of these traits and culminates in students creating their own digital citizenship superhero badge to show what they've learned.

Have your students design their very own Digital Citizen Superhero Badge.

They choose one "superpower" to focus on—being safe, responsible, or respectful online—and then write or draw on the badge to show what that superpower looks like.

 😁TEK: The Modern Cave Boy

Tek is a cave boy who is in love with his technology. He loves his tablet, video games, phone, and television. He is so in love with them that he never sees his family and friends. Will Tek unplug from technology and leave his cave?

Key points:

  • Finding a balance: The story of Tek is a fantastic way to talk about balancing screen time and play time. It shows that while gadgets are fun, it's also important to get outside and explore the world. You can discuss how we can have fun with both.

  • The importance of friendship: Tek was so focused on his devices that he was ignoring his friends. This story teaches us that spending time with friends and family is one of the most important things we can do.

  • Exploring the world around us: When Tek is forced to go outside, he discovers all the beauty he was missing. This is a great theme to encourage curiosity and a love for nature in your students. It can lead to discussions about plants, animals, and all the fun you can have outdoors.

  • Sometimes it's good to disconnect: The story's main message is a simple but powerful one: Tek learned that devices can be fun, but there’s a big, beautiful world waiting for us when we unplug.

🗣️ Discussion prompts for TEK: The Modern Cave Boy

  • Why did Tek stay in his cave all the time?

  • What are some fun things Tek missed out on because he was glued to his gadgets?

  • How did the volcano help Tek?

  • What new things did Tek discover when he went outside?

  • What’s one thing you like to do without screens?

🪞 Reflection prompts:

  • Think-Pair-Share: Ask students to think of one activity they enjoy outside or away from devices, share with a partner, and then share with the class.

  • Feelings Check: How do you feel when you’ve been on a device for a long time? How do you feel after playing outside?

🎨 Extension Activities:
